Sickle cell disease is a genetic inherited autosomal recessive diease that is associated with high morbidity and mortality. It is associated with various complications which if not managed can cause high mortality. It is important to prevent crisis events in all sickle cell patients. This requires a team approach and family support. A life-long cure for SCD is available only through hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Gene therapy trials are ongoing and show promise.
